What is the Sunshine State Young Readers Award?

SSYRA is a reading motivation program for students in elementary and middle schools throughout Florida.  The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for personal satisfaction, based on interest rather than reading level.  Each year, 15 books are carefully selected by a committee of school Media Specialists.  There’s a list for students in grades K-2 and Grades 3-5 (See links above.)  Sunshine State books are selected based on their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. Students are encouraged to read books that are above, on, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency.

Once a student has read 3 of the 15 books, they are able to vote on their favorite.  At the end of the school year, all votes throughout the entire state of Florida are collected and tallied and one book is declared the winner!

Also, as students read more and more of the books, they will earn rewards for their efforts.  For each book read, students may take a quiz and earn brag tags.  Students who read 5, 10, and 15 books will receive additional recognition.

Battle of the Books

Each year, the elementary schools in the south end of St. Johns County compete against each other in a “Battle of the Books” which tests students’ recall of the year’s SSYRA books.  In January, Battle of the Books teams will be formed, based on:

  • Scores on a Battle of the Books tryout process
  • Number of SSYRA books read
  • Sportsmanship/Positive Attitude
